So, it sprung a leak... 300DD In-wall Build

Recommended Posts

Nice frag haul! Sucks most of them didn't survive shipping.  I noticed my alkalinity drops when I let a fresh batch of water sit too.  I did a water change today with water that has been circulating for a week.  I'm out of Hanna checker alk reagent because BRS has been out of it for a while, so I had no way to test.  I decided to take a chance and do the water change anyway.  Anybody else buy multiple bottles of Hanna alk reagent at a time?  I've been blowing through mine between testing my tank and my water change water.

I got confirmation from Your Reef that they will be shipping out replacements to me for Friday delivery.

Aquahut has the Hanna Alk reagents in stock usually (for dKH, but its supposed to be the same as PPM.)  I picked up a new bottle when I was there Friday.  When I order from BRS, I usually order 2-3 at a time, since I know I go through them fast.

YR Pastel Shortcake is my new favorite. Kinda sad that it's a lost order though.

Yeah, that one was the first pieces that caught my eye when I checked the stuff on the WYSIWYG sale.  Sucks it didn't make it.  I'm hoping the replacement piece arrives in good shape on Friday, and that it's comparable in size to the one I initially picked.  I believe they said thy were likely pulling the replacement frags from the storefront tanks...

And Welcome to BRK @jelfonso19

Just wondering how those replacement frags did for you?  How's the tank doing?

Tank is doing alright, other than still fighting cyano. Did Chemiclean last night. Will do 100 gallon WC tomorrow when I get home from work.

Replacement frags came in. The freebie was the only one that didn’t make it. Looked like a pastel something. It didn’t make it long after dipping. [emoji21]

Here are a few pics of stuff in the frag tank.
Apparently I need to work with the gel filters a bit More... [emoji2365]

The Red Planet in the front started losing flesh in the display so I moved it back to the frag tank. So far it looks like it’s stopped but will continue to watch it.

Of course the freebie would croak on you...dang it.  looks like you've got a good collection of corals going.  Nice!  I'm planning on hitting up Fragniappe and hopefully adding a few nice pieces of SPS to my collection in the 30g.  Hopefully they'll be settled in and growing well by the time my 180g is ready.

Yeah. Just my luck.

So far I’ve ordered frags from Your Reef and Pieces of the Ocean on their live sale a few weeks back. The POTO frags all came in in excellent shape and are doing well so far. Mostly LPS but a couple of SPS frags.

I’ll have to adjust my lights in the display some. I think I might have been frying a couple of frags after placing them in the display. Going to drop the overall intensity by about 20%. Had one of the monti frags I got from Jerry start bleaching after a couple of weeks in the display. I popped it off and put it back in the frag tank to recover.

Hoping the ORA red planet frag recovers.

Did a Chemiclean treatment Sunday night and did the follow up WC last night. 99% of the visible cyano was gone when I got home from work last night. Took the baster to the little bit remaining and hoping that it won’t come back. Also saw a bit of GHA starting to grow in the frag tank. Will need to replenish snails in there and add a few more to the refugium to clear up the bits I couldn’t manually remove last weekend. Might try a baby sea hare if AH still has any.

Resumed dosing NO3P4X last night to hopefully head off a potential nutrient bloom from the cyano destruction. Will see.
Display is mostly clear of GHA. A few short spots that the naso ignores and the snails haven’t gotten to yet.

That’s about it on the tank update.

Sheesh, I’m bad about updating this thread. Probably need to change the title at some point.

I’ve not made any drastic changes to the system lately. The Chemiclean treatment still appears to be holding, a little cyano in the refugium but it hasn’t reappeared in the display as of yet.
Got a Sea Hare last week and dropped it in the fuge and it’s working through the GHA in between munching on the chaeto... [emoji19] Guess I’ll pull some chaeto out to reserve so it doesn’t eat it all. Picked up a mess of turbo snails, (20 Mexican and 20 Astrea) at Fragniappe to help keep algae in check in fuge and frag tank. Frag tank is close to algae free now. Most went into the fuge.
Got an Algae Blenny from Aqua Hut when John was running that special. He went into the frag tank for a couple of weeks, moved him to the display last weekend so I don’t need to feed the frag tank directly.

Picked up a Royal Gramma from AH last week. We went into the display and promptly disappeared. Didn’t see it for nearly a week. Finally caught it darting around in one of the caves when I fed frozen. Seems to be doing well.

The Naso is a pig and will attack the feeding ring with gusto. Time to increase how much food is dropped I guess. The Swallotail angel is doing well also. Out in the open a lot more and competing well with the Naso for pellets.

Ordered screen tops from Clearview on 3/10. 3-4 week lead time, so hopefully I’ll have them first week of April, and I can start getting some wrasses and anthias.

Last night, I continued mounting some frags that had been cooling in the frag tank for a while. Still have quite a few more.

Also started removing some of the hardened chunks of sand using a (brand new and unused) cat litter scoop. Works well, just need one that’s a little thinner to get between some of the rock structure. Still got some places where it’s solidified around the base of some rocks. Going to see if I can use a length of 1/2” pvc to break it up before I get too many more frags in the tank. I’ve broken that dang green anacropora colony 3 times so far.

I removed a good 5 pounds of solidified sand

We should need bone cutters by now! :)

Not really, only @2fish4u's massive teal stag frag that I split with @Reef Tank Greg is big enough to actually frag.  Got a couple of wild frags that have been growing well, but still got a lot of space to fill.

:P

You have toxic candy canes yet?

I do not yet.  Been trying to get duncans to survive so far.  on my 3rd frag now, this one seems to be doing well.  No new heads yet though.  Will try to move it into the display this weekend.

Also trying to find a good place for a torch and branching hammer frag.

I've held off posting this for a couple of weeks, but I need to get it out there...

The bad news:

It's been a pretty bad few months for my system.

Steady slow coral deaths and an equipment failure...

The leak was found when I got home from work on 7/30. I was scheduled to work late and that got cancelled due to the vendor.  So I got home around 8pm instead of the 12am or later that I was expecting.

The leak was steady, but not a catastrophic failure.  When I got home there was only a few gallons that had made it to the floor.  I promptly made the call to drain the tank and move the fish and coral to other tanks in the system.

I caught out all the fish except the Royal Gramma (couldn't that sneaky little bugger) and split them between the frag tank and the refugium.  Then I pumped out about 200 gallons of water from the display.

Once the water level was down to around 100 gallons in the tank,  the leaking slowed substantially.  I was able to direct the leak into a bucket by sliding a paper towel into the gap between the trim and glass in the leaking corner and hanging it over the bucket.  Water wicked just how I needed it to and over the next few days I only had to empty the bucket 4-5 times of 2-4 gallons each.  After that the dripping stopped completely.

So I've got a new tank being built by Planet Aquariums that I'm hoping will be delivered to Aqua Hut by 9/6 or so.

I'm not going anywhere!

Eric - so sorry to hear. Do you know where the leak is coming from or what caused it?

I have a glass cages tank that I bought used, and a fear I have is that it will leak, or worse, catastrophically fail one day. 240 gallons on the floor is not a good thing.

Apparently this sort of issue has been somewhat common with the Marineland tanks of this size.  Enough so that Planet Aquariums has a model they can quickly build to replace one with the exact dimensions, and bracing etc...

The leak is at the bottom inside the trim near the back right corner.  Same area that was accumulating moisture towards the end of that final 'leak test' before filling with salt.  Thought it was just salt creep grabbing water from the air before.  This time I'm positive it wasn't that :)   Its definitely pressure related, as very little water has been observed once it was drained to less than 25% full.
